Mould in the house

Mould in homes is a common problem. In particular, older houses have to deal with this issue because of their building style or, due to normal wearing, walls start developing cracks resulting in water penetrating from the outside walls into the inner walls. In any case, damp is always the cause of mould forming. Minuscule mould spores are part of nature and float constantly through the air around us -this in itself is not so problematic. The situation becomes a real problem when the mould spores end up getting caught in damp places. Wet, damp and warm locations are spores’ favourite breeding ground- offering them a perfect environment to multiply. In order to get rid of the mould on walls in your home for good, it is very important that you tackle the issue at it’s root. In other words: solve the cause of the damp problem. The most common damp problems are related to condensation, penetrating damp and rising damp.

Mould due to condensation

As soon as warm humid air cools down, condensation forms on surfaces. It is easy to recognise this process when cooking in the kitchen. If there is not enough ventilation in your kitchen when cooking, the kitchen window will fog up. It’s not surprising that the condensation concentrates mainly on the window, this is mainly because the window is usually the coldest place in the room and the cold attracts damp. Condensation also occurs in bathrooms when taking a hot shower or a hot bath. In such cases, the steam from the hot water will mainly settle on the colder bathroom tiles. In itself, condensation is not a major problem for possible mould formation, as long as the damp room is sufficiently ventilated so that the accumulated damp can leave the house. It only becomes a problem when the condensation is trapped and constant, allowing in this way for mould spores to attach to the mould and multiply. Therefore, in rooms where there is a lot of condensation, always use a ventilation system or have a window that you can open temporarily to prevent condensation buildup.

Mould due to penetrating damp

Contrary to mould problems due to condensation, it is often more difficult to detect the formation of mould from penetrating damp. This mould formation is related to the cracks that have formed on the outer walls. These types of cracks can develop during the subsidence of your house. The damp that enters these cracks during rainstorms or other humid weather conditions, is unable to find its way back outside and instead settles in your cold inner wall, which almost always results in mould spots appearing on the damp interior of your home. Incidentally, cracks in a wall are not always the cause of penetrating damp. The current climate changes that our country has to deal with can also lead to these kinds of problems. When it rains heavily almost continuously for a period of time, the outer wall will fill up with damp and it will not get a chance to dry properly before the next rainfall, causing the damp to spread to the inner walls. Painting the walls with impermeable paint or other materials seems to be the most logical solution in this type of case, but the impermeable coating can also cause your home to no be able to dry out, or the coating can crack over time, bringing your damp problem back to square one.

Mould due to rising damp

This appearance of mould in the house mainly affects older buildings. Over the years, the construction techniques of homes have improved considerably in many aspects, including those that were the cause of rising damp. Older buildings are usually not equipped with a damp barrier, which gives ground water free play to enter the house. In such cases, this ground water is absorbed by the stone walls until the bricks are completely saturated with damp and, as a result, walls become very wet. These soaking wet bricks, which are often found in old buildings, form an ideal breeding ground for Mould.
